Summer fun at LMU: Shakespeare on the Bluff & Movie Nights

Various dates | 8 p.m.

LMU’s popular Shakespeare on the Bluff series kicks off on June 11,

12 and 13 with three performances of “The Comedy of Errors,” directed by lacy Hornick. Then stop by the university on July 9, 10, and 11 to catch one of the bard’s most popular plays, “Hamlet,” directed by Kevin Wetmore.

Performances run 90-minutes and are held at LMU’s Drollinger Family Stage. Doors open at 6 p.m. and picnics are welcome.

If films are more your thing, the university will host summer movie nights featuring “Wicked: For Good” on June 26 and “F1: The Movie” on July 10. Movies are shown on O’Malley lawn at sunset. RSVP to secure your spot and to receive free swag! RSVP for both events and learn more at lmu.edu/summer.


Beach Movie Nights in Playa del Rey

Various Friday dates | 8 p.m.

Enjoy movies under the stars–and right on the sand–at this year’s Beach Movie Nights! Hosted by the Department of Beaches & Harbors, attendees are invited to bring

low-back lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy the shows, which start at 8 p.m.!

This year’s schedule of family favorites include:

• June 5: “Encanto”

• June 12: “Smurfs”

• June 19: “Coco”

• June 26: “The lego Movie”

• July 3: “Sketch”

• July 10: “Elio”

• July 17: “Goat”

• July 24: “Anaconda”

• July 31: “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”

Juneteenth Celebration at Runway Playa Vista

Saturday, June 13 |10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Join RUNWAY Playa Vista for an afternoon of music, culture, community, and celebration in honor of Juneteenth.

Festivities will include a performance by the Furnace Band, cultural dance and live drumming. Attendees can also explore small businesses, local vendors and artists.

PRIDEFEST at AMCS

Saturday, June 20| 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Airport Marina Counseling Service (AMCS) will again host its annual PrideFest on June 20th.

PrideFest aims to be a community event focused on health and wellness for AMCS’ LGBTQ+ clients, community, and allies, while working to reduce stigma around mental health.

The Concert Singers Present “Summer Sizzle”

June 28 | 4 p.m.

Join the Concert Singers for their next performance, which will celebrate summer! Attendees will be treated to Summer jazz standards and popular melodies.

The event kicks off with an Ice Cream Social at 3:15 and the concert starts at 4 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, located at 6323 W. 80th Street, Westchester.

26th Annual Fourth of July Parade: 250 Years of American Dreams

Saturday, July 4 | 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The LAX Coastal Chamber’s 26th Annual Fourth of July Parade will celebrate “250 Years of American Dreams.” The theme pays tribute to the enduring spirit of hope, ambition and opportunity that has shaped the nation since its founding. With the World Cup taking place in L.A. this summer, organizers are also hard at work on a few soccer-themed surprises.

The event will feature approximately 50 entries, including floats, marching bands, classic cars, community groups and more. The parade takes place along Loyola Blvd. from Westchester Park to LMU. Check out next month’s edition of the Hometown News for more info and the parade program.

Westchester Saturday Stroll

Saturday, August 15 | 4 to 7 pm

The next edition of the Westchester Saturday Stroll is scheduled for August 15 with a summer theme! Head to the Westchester Triangle to enjoy the event, which brings together art, music, treats, community and fun while the street is closed to traffic.

The lineup and festivities will be announced closer to the event, which is made possible by the Westchester Streetscape Improvement Association, the Town Center BID and the Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation.

The Westchester Triangle is located in the 6200 block of 87th Street.

Westchester Arts & Music Block Party

Saturday, September 19 | 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The community’s favorite block party is back this summer on September 19! For the 11th Annual edition of the Westchester Arts & Music Block Party (WAM), expect live music, a packed beer & wine garden, vendors, food trucks and tons of family-friendly activities hosted by local businesses and organizations! There will also be activities in the Emerson Ave. Garden, giveaways, games and more!

Organizers recently opened vendor booth applications and sponsorship forms for groups interested in participating in the WAM festivities! Early-Bird pricing runs through August 1, and vendors are encouraged to sign up early, since booths sell out every year.
