Join a free workshop at Loyola Marymount University on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024, to help you prepare your child for kindergarten, whether the transition may be a month or a year away.
Led by Applied Child Developmental Psychology Core professors Alexandra Sturm, Diana Santacrose, and Maria Pizzano, the workshop is designed to support parents and families in the transition to school. It runs from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on LMU’s Westchester Campus, 1 LMU Drive, Los Angeles, 90045.
The shift from early childhood education to elementary school is an exciting time for families. But it can be challenging to know what to expect and how best to prepare a child for the transition, or even how early to begin preparing them, given their unique strengths. In this workshop, we will focus on one research-proven developmental predictor of successful kindergarten transition:
Social-Emotional Skills and Requesting Help: We will discuss how to support your child’s ability to identify and manage their social and emotional needs and ask for help at home and in the classroom. This includes understanding how these skills develop in children, how to support children in building these skills early in their life, what parents can do to support their children in practicing emotion regulation and coping skills, and how to communicate about these skills with your child’s teachers.
During the workshop, the topic will be introduced, and skills to address the topic with your child will be presented. Finally, you’ll have the opportunity to practice the skills and support early childhood development research at LMU by providing workshop feedback, which will be used solely for research purposes, and is voluntary and not required.
The workshop will be in the McIntosh Center of LMU’s University Hall, Room 3999. Participation is limited to 40 parents.
