Kentwood Players presents RENT, a Rock Opera by Jonathan Larson

RENT is a rock musical loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s 1896 opera La Bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural young artists struggling to survive and create a life in Lower Manhattan’s East Village in the thriving days in bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. On Broadway, the musical gained critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical. The Broadway production ran for 12 years, making it one of the longest-running shows to be performed there. Its success and popularity have led to productions worldwide, and in 2005, it was adapted into a motion picture featuring most of the original cast members. A classic of mid-20th century theater, the Hitchcockian suspense drama AN INSPECTOR CALLS centers on the Birling family– Arthur, Sylvia, Sheila, and Eric -who live in a comfortable home in the fictional town of Brumley, "an industrial city in the north Midlands." The family is visited by a man calling himself Inspector Goole, who interrogates the family about the suicide of a young working-class woman in her mid-twenties, Eva Smith. During his questioning, all members of the family are lightly or deeply implicated in the girl’s undoing, including Sheila’s fiancé Gerald Croft. What begins as a parlor drama with polite banter quickly becomes acid and hateful. Everyone is not who they seem to be, including the inspector, thanks to a Twilight Zone-inspired plot twist.

When the low-born Monty Navarro finds out that he's eighth in line for an earldom in the lofty D'Ysquith family, he figures his chances of outliving his predecessors are slight and sets off down a far more ghoulish path. Can he knock off his unsuspecting relatives without being caught and become the ninth Earl of Highhurst? And what of love? Because murder isn't the only thing on Monty's mind… It’s a murderous romp filled with unforgettable music, non-stop laughs, and a scene-stealing role for one actor playing all eight of the doomed heirs who meet their ends in the most creative and side-splitting ways. FINAL WEEKEND - Performances on Friday, April 5 at 8 pm, Saturday, April 6 matinee at 2 pm, then closing Saturday, April 6 at 8 pm! "Steel Magnolias" follows the trials and tribulations of six sassy and formidable women in 1980's Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana. Truvy’s Beauty Salon is where all the ladies who are anybody in town meet every Saturday to have their hair done and exchange news and gossip. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to Ouiser, the town’s rich curmudgeon; Miss Clairee, an eccentric millionaire with a raging sweet tooth; and M’Lynn, the local social leader whose daughter Shelby, the prettiest girl in town, is about to get married. Filled with hilarious repartee and humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play takes a dark turn when the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) goes against the advice of her mother and doctor and risks her life to have a baby. The play draws the women together to deal with life, love and loss, drawing on their underlying strength and devotion to each other in good times and bad.
