LMU Presents “Ready, Set, School!” – a Kindergarten Readiness Workshop

Join a free workshop at Loyola Marymount University on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024, to help you prepare your child for kindergarten, whether the transition may be a month or a year away. Led by Applied Child Developmental Psychology Core professors Alexandra Sturm, Diana Santacrose, and Maria Pizzano, the workshop is designed to support parents and families in the transition to school. It runs from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on LMU’s Westchester Campus, 1 LMU Drive, Los Angeles, 90045. The shift from early childhood education to elementary school is an exciting time for families. But it can be challenging to know what to expect and how best to prepare a child for the transition, or even how early to begin preparing them, given their unique strengths. In this workshop, we will focus on one research-proven developmental predictor of successful kindergarten transition: Social-Emotional Skills and Requesting Help: We will discuss how to support your child’s ability to identify and manage their social and emotional needs and ask for help at home and in the classroom. September 23-27 is National Falls Prevention Week. Did you know that 1 in 4 older adults report falls each year? Westside Pacific Villages is hosting a free webinar on Falls Prevention on Thursday, September 26th from 5-6pm. Carol Hahn, a registered nurse and certified personal trainer, will speak about what you can do to help prevent falls and stay safe at home and in the community. LMU Radio’s KXLU-FM Honors Latinx Heritage Month at Salsa Fest

Salsa Fest, a daylong celebration of Latin music, dancing, food, and local vendors hosted by LMU’s Radio’s KXLU-FM, returns to Loyola Marymount University in its seventh year during Latinx Heritage Month. The free event is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024. Salsa Fest VII comes as LMU Radio’s KXLU 88.9 FM marks 51 years of its popular “Alma del Barrio” show, started by then-LMU students Enrique “Kiki” Soto and the late Raul Villa in fall 1973. The celebration will include special recognitions honoring long-running world music programs at LMU Radio’s KXLU-FM, including “The Brazilian Hour,” “Serenata de Trios,” and “Groove Time.” Also being recognized is “Alma” alumnus DJ and author Alan Geik.
